Competition Rules and How to Enter

Please contact the Competition Secretary with any queries.

  • Competitions are open to all paid up members of the Society.
  • All original images must be the member's own work. (This does not preclude the use of commercial printing)
  • Competition entries should be handed in at least 3 weeks before the date of the competition judging evening, unless advised otherwise. If there are too few entries, the competition may be cancelled or revised at the discretion of the Competition Secretary.
  • There will be 4 open subject competitions and 2 set subject competitions (The Set Subject competitions are intended to show members' differing interpretations of a set subject. There are two choices of subject matter per competition.)

    KNOCKOUT [26 October 2009] – Up to 2 digital images should be submitted on a disk or other storage medium bearing membership number (not name) and the titles of the images it contains. This will be judged by Society members.

    SET SUBJECT - WATER/ENERGY [9 November 2009] - Entries (maximum of 4, no more than 2 per subject) can be digital images, mounted prints or slides. Maximum mounting board size is 20” x 16”. (or 50cm x 40cm)
    Digital images to be on a disc or memory stick, with membership number and any title(s) included. Prints should have membership number and any title on the reverse. Slides should be mounted, titled, correctly spotted, with membership number included.
    Entries will be judged by Society members on the night, with a winner chosen for each subject and then a single overall winner from both subjects.
    Entries should be submitted to the Competition Secretary no later than 2 November 2009.

    PROJECTED IMAGES [23 November 2009]
    - maximum 5 - images should be submitted on a disk or other storage medium bearing membership number (not name) and the titles of the images it contains. Transparencies should be spotted and bear membership number (not name) and title.

    AUDIO VISUAL (A/V) [25 January 2010] - Each entrant may submit up to two entries, each no more than 6 minutes running time. Entries should consist of a set of digital images presented in an automated production sequence (ie. not just a uniform photographic "slide show"), together with sound track. Each entry should be submitted on a separate disk or digital medium bearing only the entrant's membership number and title of the audio-visual presentation. The judge will be asked to choose a winner.

    SET SUBJECT - ARCHITECTURE/ENGINEERING [8 February 2010] - Entries (maximum of 4, no more than 2 per subject) can be digital images, mounted prints or slides. Maximum mounting board size is 20” x 16”. (or 50cm x 40cm)
    Digital images to be on a disc or memory stick, with membership number and any title(s) included. Prints should have membership number and any title on the reverse. Slides should be mounted, titled, correctly spotted, with membership number included.
    Entries will be judged by Society members on the night, with a winner chosen for each subject and then a single overall winner from both subjects.
    Entries should be submitted to the Competition Secretary no later than 1 February 2010.

    PRINTS [8 March 2010]
    - maximum 5, Colour or Black and White - should be on mounting board of a size not exceeding 20” x 16”, (or 50cm x 40cm), with the title of the picture and the entrant's membership number (not name) on the reverse.
     
  • For each competition a separate list showing image titles, entrant's name and membership number should be submitted.
  • The Judge of the Projected Images and Print Competitions will be asked to comment on each photograph in a constructive manner, and to select his/her top three images, including a winner. Other images may be commended.
  • The Society will take all reasonable care of prints, disks or other digital media, but cannot accept responsibility for their safety. With the agreement of the author, entries may be retained after the competition for publicity purposes.
