The question “where did that picture come from?” is a frequent one at competitions and although the answer is probably “The Lakes”, (or a similar beauty spot), the query usually refers to the IDEA for a unique or outstanding picture.
On this page Mike Sadler takes us through the thought processes involved in producing one of these pictures. The final product is entitled ‘Absolute Power’ and was Highly Commended in our recent print competition
The first picture on the left is outside the British Museum. The special exhibition is ‘Hadrian Empire and Conflict’. There is lots going on with the building providing a magnificent backdrop.
Mike focuses in on a group in front of one of the posters but it looks a little too busy with so many people detracting from the background.
In this picture Mike has switched to the left with only two people and tries to introduce the bridge into the picture.
Now with a tight crop the picture has a lot more impact ....
... and removing the lower distracting line also improves the image but this is still a picture where the eye struggles to find a main focal point.
Finally Mike takes the plunge and decides to remove the bridge. The photograph now appears much stronger with the brooding Hadrian looking down on the girls.
A quick visit to Photoshop to remove the white text and “Where did that picture come from?” is on everyone’s lips! A fine example of a good opportunity developed into a great photograph.
