Image Interpretation

The Image Interpretation volunteers, Andy Reilly, Brian Edlin and Ian Woodrow, were asked to interpret four original images, produce their own versions, and explain to the audience their interpretation of the original and how it was manipulated in their variation.

Andy’s original Sunrise Stack

Brian’s artistic interpretation

Brian on the other hand tended to prefer the use of artistic brushes and detail enhancement on his version of Sunrise Stack, multiple exposures on Dunstanburgh Castle, and meticulous removal of superfluous items in his version of Am Ploenlein.

Ian increased the saturation to produce a more pleasant image

Andy’s second original seascape Dunstanburgh

Andy worked to bring out the strength of the waves

And finally Brian’s original Am Ploenlein

Andy focused on the central buildings and moved to a portrait format

Andy, Brian and Ian rose to the challenge and gave comprehensive and practical interpretations of the images, with Andy and Brian preferring Photoshop and Ian choosing Aperture and other Mac based software.

and what he thought it should really look like.

and Ian’s almost HDR take on the same picture.

Ian’s interpretations included semi HDR on Sunrise Stack, leather background on Dunstanburgh and adding rain on to the image of Am Ploenlein.

and his monochrome interpretation.

while Andy went for the old fashioned postcard look.

Brian’s interpretation was highly cropped with multiple overlays

Brian’s version lost the modern street traffic

Ian added rain to complete the scene

Many favourable comments were received on both the excellence of the interpretations and the way the technical aspects were covered in a “non too technical” manner, by all participants so that everyone was able to understand how they achieved their results.

Whilst we all agree it is best to capture the image in camera there is no substitute for knowing what can be done with imagination and the right software. Our thanks go to Andy, Brian and Ian for expertly produced interpretations.
